A good day for Surf And Hope

Today we had the Charity Surf at the Roxy Pro, right before the longboarding finals. So many great french athletes were here and there was a really fun vibe, they all got waves and had a good time.

At the end of the day we got a 10 000 euro check for Surf And Hope which is amazing, it's going to help so much.

It was also the day of the results of the Anglet Surf Film Festival, where the movie "Titan Kids" got the Jury's Special Price so another really good surprise. The kids will be stoked to see their movie won something in France.

A victory for Surf And Hope...

Surfer of the week: Flavinho

Flavinho is a 13 year old surfer from Titanzinho who follows the Surf and Hope program with Fera's surfschool. As he hasn't been to school so much in the past years, the deal was: if he learnt how to read and write and went to school everyday, he could get a board and start competing with the other kids. He chose to work hard to learn and be a surfer, and he is now able to read, write and to compete which makes us very proud. Flavinho will be doing contests in the state of Ceara this month.

Flavinho tem 13 anos de idade e e um dos surfistas do titanzinho que faz parte do projeto SURF AND HOPE junto com a Escola Beneficiente De Surf Titazinho. Ele nao frequentou muito a escola nos ultimos anos. Combinamos com ele que se ele fosse a escola todos os dias e aprendesse a ler e escrever ele participaria dos campeonatos. Ele escolheu trabalhar duro e aprender. Agora ele sabe ler e escrever e vai competir esse mes da etapa do cearense amador.

manu chao no Titan

This is the video from the first Titan Kids show in Brazil, in Titanzinho. Manu Chao was here and played a few songs for us which was really cool! All the kids were stoked!

A primeira vez que a gente mostrou Titan Kids no Brasil foi no Titanzinho. O musico Manu Chao estava presente e tocou musica pra gente, foi um momento muit irado na historia do projeto! Obrigado Manu!

It is with a lot of sadness we learnt that Thiago Dias, one of Titanzinho's best surfers just passed away. One more gone way too young our thoughts go to his family and friends... Rest in peace Thiago...

Realmente muito triste! Mais um se foi... O aumento do consumo de drogas, da violencia, descaso do poder publico e a indiferencia da sociedade que quase sempre esquece de simplesmente olhar para o lado, sao so algumas das causas!

Premiere Titan Kids in Titanzinho

Hi all, I've been in Titanzinho, Fortaleza, for the last couple of days. Before comming back here I was a little anxious because it had been 6 month since I last came and was wondering if everything was alright with the kids there, and if our project advanced since we left. But when we arrived we had a warm welcome from our friends as always, and we had some good surprises: Camilla, Juju, Davi and Dudu had found a sponsor, the surf club had gotten bigger with a second floor and spare rooms for the kids... I was really stoked to see everyone happy here. We also did the Titan Kids movie premiere here in Titanzinho, and we were lucky to have Manu Chao as a special guest. I've always been a big fan of his music and to meet him for real was like a dream. He is a very humble person and true inspiration... We showed him the favela and the surfclub, and he stayed for the movie and then played some songs for everybody, we had a few drinks and grilled fish. Amazing night! here are the photos... Merci Manu! and big thanks to all the people who believe in our project and have helped us to make all of this happen! I hope we can live a lot of good moments like these in the future and help more kids get into surfing... Juju Neros exclusiva para o cearasurf

Juju em entrevista exclusiva para o site cearasurf fala da sua primeira viagem para o Rio de Janeiro para competir na última etapa do circuito Petrobras de surf feminino na Barra da Tijuca no Posto 4 nos dias 29/30 de outubro de 2010.

"A minha primeira viagem de avião foi muito boa uma experiência nova em minha vida senti uma sensação muito diferente quando o avião começou a andar na pista, confesso que fiquei nervosa e quando decolou eu senti um frio na barriga".

"Fui me acostumando, pois ali começava um novo desafio para mim só em pensar que eu ía surfar em água gelada, já que sou acostumada a surfar em água quente aqui no Ceará, no quintal da minha casa no Titanzinho. Não foi fácil surfar em água gelada ainda mais com roupa de borracha muito apertada, quando eu entrei no mar foi uma sensação estranha parece que eu estava congelando, mas o professor Fera falou que eu ficasse remando para não sentir frio e logo fui me acostumando".

"Eu me senti muito bem por estar nesta competição com as ex tops do circuito mundial Jaqueline Silva,Tita Tavares, com a Brigite Mayer,Andréa Lopes, Diana Cristina, e claro com as minhas amigas do Titanzinho, Larissa dos Santos, Letícia Cavalcante e com a local da Abreulândia Nayra Silva, isso foi com certeza uma vivência maravilhosa que nunca vou esquecer, pois só via as profissionais em revista e filme de surf e de repente eu estava ali com elas é como se fosse um sonho que com dez anos de idade já realizei, isso foi demais".

"Achei a competição muito boa, disputei a bateria com garotas que viajam direto pelo Brasil e pelo mundo a fora em busca de novos desafios e em outras competições.Logo eu também estarei desbravando o mundo a fora".

Juju competiu na categoria Gromets perdeu de cara, ela comentou que não estava acostumada com a água e isso dificultou o seu desempenho.

Já na categoria Mirim a atleta falou que estava se adaptando e foi passando fase por fase até chegar na final com a atual campeã do circuito Brasileiro Amador a capixaba Barbara Segato, que ganhou a etapa e foi campeã do Petrobras, a atleta Larissa dos Santos ficou com a 2ª colocação e a carioca Letícia ficou em 3ª colocação.

Juju ficou em quarto e com um gosto de vitória, pois foi a primeira vez que saiu do Ceará para disputar um campeonato fora e com um nível tão alto.

"Fiquei muito feliz com este resultado que foi de nível Nacional, em 2011 pretendo correr todo o circuito com o objetivo de adquirir novas experiências e ser campeã do circuito".

A pequena Juliana de Sousa, 10, 5 anos de surf foi o destaque da última etapa do Circuito Petrobras de Surf Feminino na mídia local.

Big rider Carlos Burle dá treinamento especial a crianças de favela no Ceará

As crianças da Escola Beneficente de Surfe do Titanzinho tiveram um fim de semana especial. Carlos Burle, campeão mundial de ondas grandes, foi até a favela cearense para dar aulas teóricas e, claro, práticas. Ele orientou e avaliou 15 pequenos surfistas.

- O surfe me proporcionou a vida que eu sempre quis. Vim aqui para retribuir. Um campeão precisa ser muito mais do que um grande atleta. Precisa ser um exemplo de ser humano. O esporte precisa ser reconhecido como ferramenta de transformação social e estamos aqui para garantir isso - disse Burle.

Neste ano, o pico de surfe cearense, que revelou talentos do surfe mundial como Tita Tavares e Pablo Paulino, virou um documentário. Lee Ann Curren, filha do tricampeão mundial Tom Curren, dirigiu o filme “Titan Kids” para divulgar e arrecadar fundos para o trabalho social feito por lá. Ela conheceu a comunidade através de seu namorado, o cearense André Silva, nascido no Titanzinho.

Boards for sale at the Quik pro France, the money raised will go to Surf And Hope

The Quik pro France is comming again and we are happy to say that all the pro surfers boards we collected at the beginning of the year (see older posts) will be for sale in the Quiksilver foundation tent at the event.

It's 1000 euros for one board, amongst them Kelly Slater's, Steph Gilmore's, Mick Fannings and many other. Get quik not to miss the opportunity!

You can also get a 2€50 ticket to win Julian Wilson's board that will be given during his movie premiere "Scratching the Surface" on October 3rd. Just get a ticket in any Quiksilver Shop or on the event site.

All the money will go to Surf and Hope, with 1000€ we can do many things, in food helps, education, little cultural trips and of course a big helps for young kids to be able to surf...

Thanks again to the surfers, to quik and roxy to participate, and thanks to the ones who will buy a board!

we went to Titanzinho last month so i thought i would give a little update about the project,

the kidds are doing good, marcelinho is going back to school, and most of the little surfers look pretty focused on training and going to school which is a good thing. The house is almost ready, and three of the girls are going to be sponsored by roxy so they are frothing... we had a really fun time hanging out with them, here are some photos we got..

KASSIA MEADOR GIVES HER BOARD FOR SURF&HOPE

Famous surfer Kassia Meador who came to Biarritz for the Roxy Jam unfortunately broke her longboard during a session... But that was our luck because she gave it to the foundation to help the Titan Kids and their surf journey... We will try to sell it 800$, you can get just half of it and keep it as a piece of Art (her artist friends Colin Whitbread and Brandon Lomax painted it) or we get it fixed for you so you can surf it.

building the house...

on that photo you see the house we are building that will be like a little local for the kids,

we will get a lady to make lunch everyday and look after the kids, put a bunch of beds upstairs for those who would need a calm place to stay for the night, a little tv to show the surfing sessions that are filmed every week.

ROXY JAM starting tomorrow- pro surfer's boards for sale on site...

Hi all,

so that's it, the roxy jam is starting and some of the boards that the pro surfers gave will be for sale over there, in the charity shop. We gave up the idea of making the artists paint on them because we thought it would be cool for someone to get his favorite surfer's board just like it was ridden...the boards that will be there are:

the board will be sold 1000 euros, with that we can for example make 10 boards for the kids, or many other things...

Titan Kids, the movie

This is the trailer of te movie Lee-Ann and Andre are making, about the favela of Titanzinho, their trip over their, life in the favela, and how surfing can benefit the kids.

The movie will be out during the summer 2010, first for festivals and tv channels, and maybe later on DVD.... We'll send more news about it soon!

Thanks to the help of the people at Roxy, Maritxu and Brett, we managed to get About 15 boards from famous professionals surfers, and the same number of artists to paint the boards.

This event will be huge for us, so a big thanks to all the people who've helped us, the surfers, the artists, and we will post more news from this action very soon...

Hi people,

this is the inauguration of this Surf and Hope blog, our goal is to help kids of Titanzinho, a favela of North Brasil, to surf and stay out of the streets thanks to this wonderfull sport.

If the project is working well, we will try to extend it to other poor surf areas, like Mexico, Carribean, Morocco etc ect...

The website is comming soon, the blog is out.
